Peer Research Project: Safety and Safe Spaces
CHISPA was commissioned to deliver a peer research project exploring perceptions and experiences of safety among secondary school-aged young people. The project involved three workshop sessions with Year 9 students (approximately 30 participants per session), bringing together three cohorts: a group of girls and young women, a group of boys and young men, and a mixed-gender group.
The workshops aimed to develop a broader understanding of young people's awareness of safety, identify the places and spaces where they feel safe or unsafe, and explore how experiences differed across groups. Through discussion, mapping activities, and peer-led research methods, young people shared their perspectives on safety within their communities. The project culminated in the creation of a Safe Spaces Map and accompanying analysis, providing valuable insight into local safety concerns, common themes, and opportunities for services and stakeholders to respond to young people's needs.
