Drift Tricks
Drift Tricks: Tidelines is an audio art project co-created by two Gloucester skaters, Chantelle Prince and Callum Docksey, with facilitation and support from artists Dani Abulhawa and Guillaume Dujat.
The artwork was inspired by the process of creating the Drift Tricks: Tidelines playable sculptures, installed in Gloucester’s Kings Square from 17–22 August 2026. The sculptures were themselves created through a collaborative process, developed with Gloucester’s skating communities and facilitated by artists Dani Abulhawa and Bedir Bekar.
Dani and Bedir, were invited to lead this project by Gloucester-based Chispa CIC, working in collaboration with Take A Part, Plymouth. Chantelle and Callum introduced the artists to the city and its skating communities, and the artists then facilitated a co-design process with local skaters to develop the sculptures. The sculptures were made with support from Arts Council England.
During this process, the team uncovered stories about Gloucester’s past and present. The idea of creating an audio artwork connected to the sculptures arose as a way of deepening people’s engagement with them. The audio work has been created with the support of Voices Gloucester.
In response to the themes and stories that emerged, the audio artwork aimed to capture and amplify the lived experiences of Gloucester’s multigenerational skating and migrant communities. It explores how both communities have historically been excluded from public spaces, while developing powerful grassroots cultures of resilience, creativity and belonging. The audio artwork is intended for anyone to listen to, offering a glimpse into the experiences and aspirations of people who are both generational residents and new residents to the city.
Chantelle and Callum gathered interviews for the audio work and selected a series of excerpts from those conversations. They chose moments that they felt represented the most important parts of the discussions and of each person’s experience. Dani and Guillaume then developed a structure for the two audio tracks, before Guillaume edited and mastered the final work, integrating his own original musical compositions.
Track one focuses on interviews with six skaters from Gloucester. Their voices are interwoven with an original poem written and performed by Viva, one of the participants interviewed about their experience of migrating to the city.
Track two focuses on three new residents of Gloucester, who have migrated to the city from other countries and from elsewhere in the UK. This track features an original poem by one of the participants, Sal.
Although they are presented as two separate tracks, both explore what it means to feel welcomed and the importance of Gloucester’s public spaces in creating a sense of belonging and community spirit.
Each track is connected to one of the two main sculptures created as part of Drift Tricks: Tidelines and can be accessed through a QR code. The sculptures and audio artworks will become part of a national collection, bringing local voices to a wider audience.
